Around mid-morning on Sunday, the municipality of Pilon, in the province of Granma, experienced strong seismic activity.
On Monday, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) expressed solidarity with the Cuban people and government, following strong earthquakes of magnitudes 6.0 and 6.7 on the open-ended Richter scale, felt on Sunday in several provinces in the eastern and central parts of the island.

The regional integration organization stated it is closely monitoring information provided by Cuban authorities and institutions, which have reported affected homes, power outages, and landslides from mountainous areas.
“The member states of the alliance stand in solidarity with this sister nation, which is facing this new event after weeks of hurricanes. They support the hard work of the Cuban government and people to save lives and restore normalcy,” said ALBA Secretary Jorge Arreaza.
The seismic activity was recorded mid-morning by the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) near the municipality of Pilón, in Granma province. Several hours later, Cenais had reported 40 aftershocks from these events, fifteen of which were noticeable.
The impact of these events has reached the island’s eastern region at a time when it is still recovering from Hurricane Oscar’s impact—three weeks ago—and from intense rainstorms in recent days.
Oscar left a toll of eight dead and two missing, numerous floods, agricultural losses, partial and total housing collapses, communities cut off for several days, severe disruptions to the power service, and other damages.
Currently, ALBA includes Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica, and Saint Lucia.
